Blaenau Gwent Council, together with all Headteachers, has today formally agreed its approach to the start of the Spring term in January 2021.
The Welsh Government, following discussions with the Welsh Local Government Association, recently approved a nationwide approach to schools re-opening which included flexibility for phased start dates; the option for remote learning and provision for the children of critical workers and the most vulnerable pupils.
Since the announcement we have worked closely with our Head-teachers and Governing Bodies in Blaenau Gwent to agree the following common approach:
• All schools will have either planning/INSET days on both Monday, 4th and Tuesday 5th January 2021. This is to ensure that staff can prepare fully for a safe return for learners. No pupils will attend school on these days;
• Remote Learning will be provided for all pupils on the 6th, 7th and 8th January 2021;
• On Wednesday 6th; Thursday 7th and Friday 8th January 2021, childcare provision will be available for the children of critical workers only; and for identified vulnerable pupils including pupils with a Statement of SEN. Eligible parents will be asked to apply for this provision;
• Secondary schools are looking to establish provision for Year 11 learners (as a priority group) from the 6th January 2021; and,
• Schools will welcome back all learners from Monday, 11th January 2021.
This is the approach that we have currently agreed with schools, and any change to this will be communicated accordingly.

“Minimising disruption to the learning of children and young people remains a priority for the Council, which we have to balance carefully with the health & well-being of learners and the whole school community.
We’re pleased that we have been able to work closely with our Headteachers again on this agreed approach, which provides clarity for parents and carers around the re-opening of schools in January. It is important that schools have the time to prepare effectively for a safe return for all learners.
Learning will be provided remotely for some of the first week, ensuring the least possible disruption to education, and as always we will continue to provide the necessary support for our most vulnerable learners and their families.

Direct payments for Free School Meals will continue until the week ending Friday, 8th January.
