The skill sets required in the workplace have changed significantly over the last decade, our global economy has dramatically evolved and requires new, innovative methods to train a future workforce. Driven mainly by technological advances many jobs have completely disappeared, due to automation, whilst new ones are appearing every day. The way students interact, learn and connect has also changed so a new programme of learning is required to address the balance.
STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Key skills such as problem solving, digital literacy, critical analysis, communication and independent thinking are among the new skills required to create a competitive workforce capable of adapting to the changing workplace.
To address the skills shortage Tech Valleys have developed the STEM Facilitation project which is based within Blaenau Gwent Schools. Funded by Welsh Government the scheme will initially be established within the Ebbw Vale cluster of schools. It will set out to prepare pupils for the modern work environment and also complement the school curriculum.
Team Leader for the project, Louise Juliff, has been actively working within schools and partner organistions to identify and enhance learning activities. She is ensuring the new project meets the school, employment and skills base needed for businesses, which is essential for future development.
Councillor Dai Davies, Executive Member for Regeneration at Blaenau Gwent Council, commented:
“This project is a fantastic initiative that will help the young children of Blaenau Gwent to access the high-skilled jobs that will be available to them. There are so many opportunities for us to take advantage of and we have already identified some very exciting possibilities that will make the children realise how beneficial STEM subjects are to future careers”.
Economy Minister Vaughan Gething said:
“At a time when the future of work in Wales is being driven by digital innovation at a pace never seen before, it is essential we raise the aspirations of our learners to embrace ever-evolving technologies.
“The Tech Valleys STEM Facilitation project will prepare pupils for their journey into the world of work by increasing awareness of exciting opportunities for careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

Industry Liaison Officer, Jasmin Bidwell, who is part of the project team has recently begun engaging with local businesses to make sure that all aspects of education meet with the expertise needed for business. Employer demand for STEM qualifications is high and this new approach will raise pupil aspirations, whilst providing a workforce that can meet future business requirements throughout Blaenau Gwent.
