Many of Blaenau Gwent’s important buildings, archaeological remains and open spaces are protected in order to preserve their special character.
Conservation Areas
Blaenau Gwent has 2 Conservation Areas that have been designated for their special architectural or historic interest. Both are in Tredegar. These are Bedwellty Park and Garden and the Southern Town Area. You can view the conservation area boundaries on the Tredegar Conservation Area map.
There are special planning controls if your property is located in a conservation area and guidance on these can be found on the Planning Portal website.
If you are considering an alteration to your property and would like advice, you are advised to submit a pre-application enquiry.
Permission is also required for works to trees within Conservation Areas.
Historic Parks and Gardens
Bedwellty Park and Garden is the only Registered Historic Park and Garden in Blaenau Gwent that features in the Cadw Register of Landscapes, Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. The register provides information to help protect and conserve these special places.
Listed Buildings
There are 53 Listed Buildings in Blaenau Gwent. Buildings are listed by Cadw to ensure their special architectural or historic interest is fully recognised. Listed Building Consent is needed when a proposed alteration or extension affects the character of a listed building, or those in its curtilage.
Scheduled Ancient Monuments
Cadw has scheduled 13 Scheduled Ancient Monuments in Blaenau Gwent.
It is an offence to carry out works at the site of a scheduled ancient monument without first obtaining the necessary Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent from Cadw.
