Home Care and Extra Care

Home Care

What is Home Care?

Home Care is also known as domiciliary care. It is care that is provided in your own home. The aim of Home Care is to ensure people’s independence is maintained.

Home carers are professionals who help individuals to live independently in their own homes through daily visits, providing support with personal care e.g. toileting, washing, getting up/going to bed and meal preparation.

How do I get an assessment?

You need to contact Social Services or ask someone to do it for you.  This can be by telephone or letter.

We'll talk with you about your goals, care and support needs, how to meet them, and whether you qualify for Social Services assistance. This is called an assessment.

Will I have to pay?

  •  If you are provided with a service, following assessment, we will see whether you are able to make a contribution towards the cost of your service.
  • Your payment will depend on the level of care you need and your financial circumstances. We’ll inform you of the cost before providing services.

What can I do if it goes wrong?

  •  Should you have any concerns with the Carer providing your care, you will need to contact your Home Care Monitoring officer or Manager  who will look into your concerns.

If you are unhappy about the service, you can either:

  • Complain to the Service Provider.
  • Complain to your Social Worker .

Alternatively you can contact the Complaints Officer based at the Social Services Department’s Headquarters

Please note we do not offer shopping, domestic services, or medication administration only calls.
