A week-long clean-up campaign has seen volunteers brave all weathers to improve local green spaces, parks, waterways and public paths in a powerful show of community pride and environmental action.
Nearly 50 bags of litter were collected during Blaenau Gwent Volunteer Week, which took place from 19-24 October. Organised by Keep Wales Tidy, the week saw volunteers of all ages come together to target litter hotspots, making a visible difference to the environment.
Councillor Helen Cunningham, Llanhilleth Ward, joined the Llanhilleth street and river clean-up and commented:
"It’s been a wonderful week with community groups, organisations and volunteers coming together to help transform the local environment. The work that Keep Wales Tidy have done to make this possible and collaborate with local organisations and Gwent Wildlife Trust is incredible and I'm so grateful to them."
Funded by Welsh Government and supported by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council’s waste services team, Blaenau Gwent Volunteer Week is part of ongoing work to support cleaner neighbourhoods and empower local people to take action in their communities.
Debbie Cox, Keep Wales Tidy Project Officer for Blaenau Gwent said:
“We’re incredibly proud of everyone who gave their time, energy and enthusiasm throughout the week. Thanks to their efforts and the support of our local partners, nearly 50 bags of litter were removed, creating a visible and lasting difference across Blaenau Gwent.
“Volunteer Week highlights the incredible impact that can be achieved when people come together to care for their local environment.
“We hope the week encourages even more people to get involved and experience the positive impact volunteering can have on both their community and their own wellbeing. Whether you have an hour to spare or would like to volunteer more regularly with friends, family or neighbours, Keep Wales Tidy can provide the support, equipment and opportunities to help you make a difference.”
