Blaenau Gwent Council Leader and Executive Committee appointed at AGM

The Annual General Meeting of Blaenau Gwent Council was held virtually today (Thursday, 27th May 2021).

Councillor Nigel Daniels was re-elected as Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Corporate Services; with Councillor David ‘Dai’ Davies re-elected as Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development. 

Councillor Julie Holt was elected as Chair of Council, with Cllr Malcolm Day elected as Vice Chair.

The Council’s Executive Committee members and their relevant portfolios are as follows:

Leader and Corporate Services – Councillor Nigel Daniels
Deputy Leader and Regeneration & Economic Development – Councillor Dai Davies
Environment – Councillor Joanna Wilkins
Education – Councillor Joanne Collins
Social Services – Councillor John Mason

Leader Cllr Nigel Daniels said:

“The last year has been an incredibly difficult and unsettling time for everyone. The Executive Committee appointed today, together with the chairs and vice chairs of committees, provides stability and experience going forward. We will continue to work hard in our respective portfolios to help our communities recover from the effects of the Pandemic, and also to deliver the priorities our residents tell us are important to them.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of Council for their hard work and dedication in supporting their constituents throughout the Pandemic.”

The Chairs and Deputy Chairs of the following committees were also appointed:

• Corporate Overview Scrutiny – Cllr Stewart Healy (Chair) and Cllr Martin Cook (Vice Chair)
• Democratic Services – Cllr John C Morgan (Chair) and Cllr Bob Summers (Vice Chair)
• Social Services Scrutiny – Cllr Steve Thomas (Chair) and Cllr Keri Rowson (Vice Chair)
• Education & Learning Scrutiny – Cllr Haydn Trollope (Chair) and Cllr Julie Holt (Vice Chair)
• Community Services Scrutiny – Cllr Mandy Moore (Chair) and Cllr Clive Meredith (Vice Chair)
• Regeneration Scrutiny – Cllr John Hill (Chair) and Cllr Gareth A Davies (Vice Chair)
• Planning, Regulatory & General Licensing Committee – Cllr Denzil Hancock (Chair) and Cllr Wayne Hodgins (Vice Chair)

The Chair and Vice-Chair of Audit will be agreed by the Committee in due course.
