Blaen-Y-Cwm Primary School praised in latest inspection report

Blaen-y-Cwm Primary School in Brynmawr has received glowing feedback in its recent Estyn inspection, highlighting a commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where pupils thrive both academically and personally.

The report highlighted:

  • A deep understanding of the needs of the local community
  • High expectations for pupils’ achievement and behaviour
  • Outstanding care for pupils’ well-being, which contributes to a calm, happy atmosphere across the school
  • Polite, confident and eager to learn pupils who respond positively
  • Consistently strong teaching
  • A stimulating and meaningful curriculum , with pupils producing imaginative, high-quality work.

Inspectors also acknowledged strong progress in literacy, digital skills, and physical development, alongside effective support for pupils with additional learning needs.

The report celebrates pupils’ active contribution to school life through groups such as the school council and equality champions, as well as improving attendance rates, including among pupils from low-income families.

Headteacher Sarah Oliver-Bryant said:

“At Blaen-y-Cwm Primary we work very hard to create a 'Happy, Ambitious, Inclusive Community', where all pupils learn to thrive and become independent learners. This ESTYN inspection truly reflects our school vision. The School Governors and I are incredibly proud of our school community, but especially our pupils and school staff."
