Silent Valley Local Nature Reserve

Once a farm with meadows and an old coal pit, this local reserve is now the highest and most westerly beech wood in Britain. The reserve is managed jointly by Gwent Wildlife Trust and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and some of the reserve has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

This unique woodland is a magical place for families to visit. The ancient beech trees provide a dramatic backdrop of fresh green leaves in spring turning to vibrant orange in autumn. In May the woods are filled with Bluebells where the peace is broken by birdsong and the stream as it meanders through the woods, over rocks and under bridges.
