Next steps
Every council in Wales was asked to collect residents’ feedback on 20mph limits so that they could assess this against revised Welsh Government guidance on setting 30mph speed limits on restricted roads and other 20mph speed limit roads. This revised guidance was published in July.
Blaenau Gwent County Council has conducted a comprehensive review of the 20mph speed limits across the county, following the Welsh Government's call to gather residents' feedback and provision of new '30mph exception' guidance in 2024.
The council's request for feedback generated 82 responses. The feedback identified 26 roads where consultees felt that returning to the 30mph speed limit would be more appropriate.
After reassessing the identified roads against the Welsh Government's updated 30mph guidance, which reiterates the importance of providing a safe environment for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, whilst factoring the movement function and road characteristics, the council has concluded that the following change will be made:
- A section of the A467, Aberbeeg Road will revert to its former speed limit of 40mph.
- All other roads currently set at 20mph should remain.
It is important to note that comments related to the general policy or Trunk Roads were not considered, as these are matters for the Welsh Government.
