Food Hygiene Ratings

You can now find out the hygiene rating of a food related business, such as a restaurant or takeaway, via the Food Standards Agency website.

These ratings are the result of a hygiene inspection which will have been carried out by an officer from the Council’s Environmental Health Service. Food businesses will be given one of six ratings, from 0 to 5.

A ‘0’ rating requires urgent improvements to be made while a ‘5’ rating means the hygiene standards are very good.

The hygiene rating or inspection result given to a food business reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of inspection or visit. The rating is not a guide to food quality.

Premises scoring 0, 1 or 2 are revisited frequently to ensure that standards are improved quickly. If necessary, officers will close premises until the risk is removed.

Visits to all food premises are carried out, as far as reasonably possible, without prior notification and are priority programmed according to the degree of potential risk. This ensures that higher risk premises are visited more frequently than those in lower risk categories.

More information about the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, including those businesses which are in the scope of the scheme and their current food hygiene rating, can be found at www.Food.gov.uk

Any food business which has received a food hygiene rating has a legal requirement to display their score. If you would like to report a business who is displaying an incorrect score or a business which is not displaying their score at all please contact us via the ‘report it’ function or alternatively using the contact information below.
