A person counts as being in detention for council tax purposes if they are or have been:
- Held in prison, hospital, or another location by court order.
- Detained under the Immigration Act 1971 pending deportation.
- Detained in a place of safety under the Mental Health Act 1983.
To apply for a detention discount, you’ll need:
- The name and address of the establishment where they are or were detained.
- Their prison service number if they are or were in prison.
- Date of birth of the detainee
