At the Food and Fun 10-Year Anniversary Awards, held in Cardiff in November, Willowtown School proudly received the Runner-Up Award for the Pupils’ Choice Award, a recognition made even more special because it was nominated by the children who attended the Food and Fun programme during Summer 2025.

Willowtown School has been a committed partner of the Food and Fun initiative since 2018. What began with just 40 children has grown to 120 spaces, welcoming pupils from Willowtown and its cluster schools (Rhos y Fedwen, Beaufort Hill, Glyncoed and Cwm Primary Schools). The programme provides a safe, familiar, and nurturing environment where children can enjoy healthy meals, engage in fun activities, and build lasting friendships.
Councillor Sue Edmunds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Families, praised the achievement, saying:
“I have always been an advocate for the Food and Fun scheme. I’ve be fortunate to have visited several schools taking part in the scheme in Blaenau Gwent and seen firsthand the dedication that goes into making this programme a success. Watching staff play and interact with children in a safe, joyful space is inspiring—the children shine brightly, are laughing and having a wonderful time. This award is truly well deserved, especially as it’s voted for by the pupils themselves.”
School Coordinator Rebecca Hughes said “As the school coordinator for Food and Fun at Willowtown, receiving the Pupils’ Choice Runner-Up Award was an incredibly proud moment for our whole team. What makes this award so special is that the nomination came from the children themselves. Knowing that they value and enjoy what we do is the greatest recognition we could ask for.

For me, the scheme is about more than just providing meals, it’s about creating a safe, familiar space where children can learn, play, and feel cared for during the summer holidays.
Watching the children laugh, make new friends, and try new activities reminds me why this scheme matters. It’s a team effort, and I’m grateful to every staff member who brings energy and creativity to the programme. This award is a testament to their dedication and to the positive impact Food and Fun has on our community.”
Two other nominees received special recognition at the awards ceremony for their exceptional efforts in supporting the Food and Fun programme:
- Jacob Simmonds of Pen y Cwm Special School was commended for his innovative approach in adapting nutritional skills lessons. Jacob ensured that these lessons were accessible and easy to understand for pupils with a wide range of special educational needs, making lessons inclusive for all.
- Aneurin Leisure Trust was also praised for their significant contribution to the scheme. Their provision of high-quality, engaging activities across participating schools has enriched the programme, helping create memorable experiences for children during Food and Fun sessions.
