Warning to Fly-Tippers - Prosecutions Continue

This year to date 11 cases has been successfully prosecuted. These relate to a number of offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Prosecution outcomes have resulted in the individuals who fly tip being ordered to pay fines and costs by the courts.

Cllr Haydn Trollope, Executive Member for Environment from Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council Said:

“Fly-tipping is unsightly and pollutes our environment and there is no excuse for knowingly doing this.  Not only is it an anti-social and dangerous problem; it costs thousands of pounds every year to clear away.  This is money that could be spent on providing other services within the area.

“Blaenau Gwent Council will fully investigate all complaints with a fully trained, experienced enforcement officer and if we find sufficient evidence to enable a prosecution we pursue one. We are also very proactive with CCTV surveillance to proactively target-fly tippers.

“We have already successfully prosecuted a number of people this year and will continue to pursue these prosecutions in order to ensure that our environment is kept clean not only for our communities but for people who visit the area.

“We also advise people to be mindful of whom they are commissioning to take away their waste, as prosecutions can be made if you have been negligent for not checking this.

“If you have any concerns about fly-tipping or wish to report such behaviour please get in touch with the Council via 01495 311556.”
