The Cabinet has approved a public consultation into a proposal to reduce the number of primary places within Abertillery Learning Community. This is in response to significantly declining pupil numbers and growing financial pressures. The proposal presented to Cabinet would involve closing the Roseheyworth Road Campus, with pupils moving to the Tillery Street and Six Bells campuses.
The Learning Community currently has an overspend of around £900,000 which is expected to increase to £1.7million next year if all the primary campuses remain open.
Roseheyworth Road currently has 127 pupils on roll – out of a potential 210. It is the oldest campus with the highest maintenance bill.
The proposal has been developed to ensure the long‑term sustainability of the Learning Community, to protect and enhance educational standards, and address the substantial and increasing budget pressures.
The Council will now carry out a formal consultation, giving parents, staff, learners, and the wider community the opportunity to provide their views.
All feedback received will be carefully considered before any further steps are taken. The Council remains committed to ensuring that the interests of children and young people remain at the centre of all decisions.
The consultation will start on Monday, 2nd March 2026.
