Phased re-opening of Sports Centres

Blaenau Gwent Council and the Aneurin Leisure Trust are working in partnership on the safe re-opening of sports centres and leisure facilities in the county borough.

From Saturday, 15th August the sports centres in Abertillery and Ebbw Vale will be open to monthly paying members only. Gym sessions and exercise classes will need to be pre-booked via the Aneurin Leisure App -  available now from the App Store or Google Play. Visits can also be booked online at https://www.bglife.co.uk/ or by contacting reception. No membership payments will be taken until September 1st, meaning that members will be able to use the facilities during August without additional cost.

As a result of ongoing maintenance work, Tredegar Sports Centre will re-open slightly later by the beginning of September, or sooner if work is completed. Opening hours at Abertillery and Ebbw Vale have been extended to allow members to access those facilities if they wish.

Swimming sessions will be available for members only at Abertillery Sports Centre, and again will need to be pre-booked.

Councillor Joanne Collins, the Council’s Executive Member for Education, says:

“The health and well-being of local communities is important to us and we know that people are keen to get back into their fitness and sport activities, so we’re delighted that we’ve been able to work so quickly with the Trust to be in a position to reopen leisure facilities to members next week. A series of measures to help keep people Covid protected and socially distanced have been put in place at the venues and any member wishing to see these for themselves in advance is welcomed on a pre-arranged tour of the facilities prior to opening.”

Phill Sykes, Operations Director of Aneurin Leisure Trust said:

"It's fantastic that we're able to open our sport centres once again.  The staff have been working hard behind the scenes to make sure that all facilities are safe for customers and staff and with open days scheduled for 13th and 14th August, we hope to allay any concerns that customers may have about returning to their fitness regimes."

A number of Covid protected safety & hygiene measures are being implemented and you can read more about this on the Aneurin Leisure Trust website – https://aneurinleisure.org.uk/

The Trust is working with its sports groups that are Covid-compliant to utilise outdoor pitches and will continually reassess how services can be extended over the coming months to all customers.

If you would like to see the measures that have been put in place a tour of the facilities will be available on August 13th and 14th – please call reception to book a tour.
