Investing For Cleaner Streets

The extra resource is valued by residents and we received positive feedback from a series of roadshows and events which took place last autumn.

Over 500 people completed a survey at the events and online. Over 50% of responders agreed that their local town centre was clean and tidy. While 42% of responders felt that the cleanliness of the local area had improved in the last year.

The investment has allowed the introduction of town centre cleaning on weekends, increasing the capacity in our cleansing team to clean more streets in Blaenau Gwent with a particular focus on litter picking, sweeping debris and chewing gum removal.

Cleaning Our Town Centres

We now have a regular annual deep cleansing programme for our town centres. Pavements, street furniture and bus stops are cleaned using high pressure water jetting. Weeds and overgrowth are also removed.

Grass Cutting

Extra money has been allocated cutting and expanding the areas tackled throughout Blaenau Gwent.

Weed Spraying

Weed spraying across the area has increased to three sprays a year as we aim to reduce weed growth over time.

Dog Fouling

Our street cleansing team is working with ward members to identify problem areas for dog fouling across the borough so we target efforts to clearing and disinfecting  the areas most affected.

2018 Roadshows

We are going back out to the community with a series of follow up roadshows and once again we are interested in getting people’s views on the cleanliness of the local area.

A new survey for resident feedback is available on our website for those people who cannot attend the events.

Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Environment Cllr Garth Collier said:

‘We know that residents want cleaner communities from the regular feedback we receive and value a local environment they can be proud of.  With this in mind we are committed to improving the cleanliness of the local area and the additional resources provided for this priority over the last couple of years is certainly making a difference. I am looking forward to meeting residents at the events and hearing what they have to say in the survey’.
