Council Service Disruptions

Winter Maintenance & Gritting

Weather conditions are slowly improving and our priorities remain the same for the remainder of the weekend. We have secured extra machines and 4 x 4 vehicles and our teams are working around the clock to clear the heavy snow covering Blaenau Gwent.  We are prioritising areas for snow clearance and work will continue throughout the day and night.

The gritters will be out working to keep the main roads clear and our essential frontline services, in particular Social Services, will be continuing to support the most vulnerable people in our community. Home carers will be walking to calls or be transported in 4 x 4 vehicles. Thank you to staff who are dedicated to providing services in some extremely difficult conditions.

Please stay safe in these wintery conditions, only travel if essential and follow advice from Gwent Police and Public Health Wales. We have shared their posts which contain lots of helpful advice on our Facebook page.

Service requests, such as re-filling grit bins, can be made via the My Services section of the Council’s website. Please note that we are unable to respond to service requests via social media during busy periods.

Vulnerable people

A decision has been made by Blaenau Gwent Social Services that due to the adverse weather conditions, all Community Options Services and Day Centres will be closed to service users on Monday 5th March 18. Service Users will be contacted by the department so that any care or support needs can be identified and we are currently working with our domiciliary care agencies to provide support as required .Community Options staff are asked to contact their line manager in relation to arrangements for their work base for Monday morning.

Waste & Recycling

Recycling and refuse collections  have been suspended for Monday, 5th March also. Your recycling will be collected on your relevant collection day the following week and any additional recycling will be collected providing it is separated correctly and placed in clear bags. Arrangements will be made for missed refuse collections since last Thursday and we will collect this as soon as we can. Specific arrangements for refuse collections will be communicated as soon as we can next week.

The New Vale Household Waste Recycling site will also be closed on Monday, 5th March and a decision on when to re-open will be taken on Monday.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation as we focus our limited resources on snow clearance and supporting our most vulnerable residents.
