Community Roadshows - No Side Waste Policy

From 11 June 2018, no excess side waste will be collected from Blaenau Gwent households. Collection crews will only collect waste that is presented at the kerbside in a wheelie bin. Additional bags or items that are placed on top of or next to the wheelie bin will not be collected. A maximum of 4 black bags is allowed for households without a wheelie bin.
Most of what is thrown out from the house can be put out for weekly recycling collections.  In Blaenau Gwent we have made progress but we are still not achieving the recycling targets set by Welsh Government and this could result in fines being imposed.
However, we have data on the contents in wheeled bins and there is, on average, still a large amount of recyclable materials, especially food being thrown out as waste.  The aim is to get this recyclable material out of the wheeled bin, and into the weekly recycling collections.

Council Waste Wardens will be monitoring collections and advising residents how they can recycle more, and reduce the amount of waste put out for disposal.  As a last resort where residents regularly put out too much and have not taken advice on recycling, then the Council will take enforcement action. This could ultimately result in a £100 fine being issued.

The engagement programme continues the commitment to be more proactive in engaging with local people about decisions made over the delivery of services.

Councillor Garth Collier, Deputy Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council said:

‘I would like to thank residents who make every effort to recycle their waste every week. However, we are still not achieving our challenging recycling targets set by Welsh Government. There is a lot of room for improvement and we are targeting those people who do not make the effort to recycle with these changes. We want to help everyone recycle as much as they can and our wardens will be visiting all areas to provide help and advice so that residents can reduce the amount of waste placed in their wheelie bins for collection.’
