The Brilliant Schools programme, started by Andy Cope, works with children, staff and parents to teach them how to be the best version of themselves, to be resilient and to bounce back when faced with challenges. Children are also encouraged to carry out ‘random acts of kindness’ which make a difference to their class, their school, their families and their communities. Mike Martin, a coordinator for Brilliant Schools, visited the schools to train Year 5 pupils and staff and year 5 pupils trained the rest of the school and pupils, too!
Headteacher Ann Bellis says:
“We have seen a real increase in self-esteem, self-confidence and resilience in the year 5 pupils who have led the rest of the school on this wellbeing journey and we are proud of our learners’ achievements.”
Deputy Headteacher and Year 5 teacher, Sion Roberts said:
“The pupils’ positive mindset has not only impacted on their communication and leadership skills but has enhanced all areas of their learning.”
Councillor Clive Meredith, Blaenau Gwent Council’s Executive Member for Education says:
“Congratulations to everyone at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Helyg on their work with the ‘Brilliant Schools’ programme. Pupil wellbeing is such an important part of being at school and is a priority for the Council and all of our schools. We want pupils to enjoy coming to school and be happy while they learn.”
Next year pupils from Bro Helyg hope to visit other schools to share their experiences and to link up with a local care home in order to spread the happiness.
