Work has recently begun on The Aneurin Bevan Memorial Stones and surrounding area to ensure this landmark, to the founder of the National Health Service, can continue to be enjoyed by residents and tourists to Blaenau Gwent. The stones mark the spot where Aneurin Bevan gave open-air speeches to large gatherings of his constituents and the world.
Funded by Silent Valley Environmental Trust the work will include cleaning of the memorial stones, landscaping, construction of additional walls, repairs to fences, stone walls, steps and handrails. The work will be undertaken by Tillery Action For You Ltd (TAFY), which will should take approximately seven weeks to complete.

The project has also allowed TAFY to create four work placement apprenticeship opportunities. This 16 week programme will provide onsite experience whilst also allowing the apprentices to access vocational training and support. A further 15 volunteers will also be recruited and training will be provided for them to achieve an industry recognised qualification - Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS).
Councillor Dai Davies, Executive Member for Regeneration, Blaenau Gwent Council commented:
“It is important that the maintenance of such an historical site takes place to allow us all to understand the significance of the standing stones, erected in memory of Aneurin Bevan – the architect of the National Health Service. The renovation and landscaping schedule of works will ensure the site remains in good condition for visitors to enjoy”.
The Regeneration Project Team are currently seeking funding for a phase 2 which will include further enhancement work, such as improved information panels and upgrades to the car park.
