All adds up for a new venture

With large numbers of small businesses in the Blaenau Gwent area, she thought there was a need for a bookkeeping service.

Michelle also saw that whilst there are many good accountancy firms in the area, there are very few bookkeeping services and this was a gap she feels her new business can fill.

“People who are self-employed often need a little help with their financial systems, as they are so busy looking after their customers and building their businesses,” she said.

A member of the International Association of Bookkeepers, she has set up MJR Bookkeeping Services in Tredegar. The firm now has a growing clientele of small firms whom she is assisting to get their business basics right and keep them on track.

“It can be very daunting, and can even put people off starting up,” she said.  “But a little help in this goes a long way and we are pleased to offer our services at whatever level is needed.”

MJR uses Quick Books to help clients keep track of their stock, and also to prepare for the forthcoming changes under the Making Tax Digital programme.

MJR Bookkeeping Services received a grant of £730 from the Kickstart programme, run jointly by Tata Steel subsidiary UK Steel Enterprise and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. Support was also provided by Blaenau Gwent Effect.

Gail Hannam of UK Steel Enterprise said:

”It is great to see a business of this kind launching in the area. It will form part of the support network that other small businesses need to flourish.”

Cllr Dai Davies, Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development from Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council Said:

“I am pleased to say that another business from the Blaenau Gwent area has benefited from the Kick Start Grant scheme.  We are continuing to support local businesses whether they are existing or new.  I wish MJR Bookkeeping all the success.  The grant scheme is delivered in partnership between the Council and UK Steel Enterprise. Whether you are a new or existing business, please contact our regeneration team and visit the Blaenau Gwent Council website for information about the business support available to you.”
