Abertillery Learning Community officially opened its doors to over 1,500 pupils this month.
The Learning Community will provide 3 – 16 through learning for primary and secondary age pupils who will be based on five campus sites throughout the Abertillery and Six Bells area.
Plans are progressing to bring together the pupils on the Queen Street Campus and Bryngwyn Road Campus under one roof in a new build community primary school in Six Bells. Together with the new Tillery Street Campus build, this will result in a £15million plus investment into the school estate in this area over the next few years.
Principal of the Learning Community Liz Miles said:
“It is very exciting to welcome pupils into the new Abertillery Learning Community this week. Our mission is to raise the standards and aspirations of every learner regardless of their starting point. All of the staff are looking forward to working with pupils, parents and the wider community to make sure that every learner has access to high quality teaching and interesting, meaningful learning experiences. Abertillery Learning Community will build on the good work of the predecessor schools which resulted this year in the best ever GCSE results for pupils that attended Abertillery Comprehensive.”
The Abertillery Learning Community is another step in the Council’s plans to transform Education and drive up standards in Blaenau Gwent in order to raise achievement and aspirations and make sure our children and young people are best placed to meet their full potential.
Cllr Keren Bender, Blaenau Gwent Council’s Executive Member for Education said:
“It is wonderful to see the Council’s vision for 3 – 16 learning in the Abertillery area come to fruition today. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the staff and pupils the very best. We are starting to see real improvements in Education and we remain committed to making the necessary improvements in order to raise standards and outcomes for our children and young people.”
Each campus in the Learning Community has kept its current school uniform colours but all will have the new logo. Keeping the uniform colours the same was identified by pupils and parents during the engagement phase as being important to retain each site’s identity.
The campuses are called:
- Secondary Campus
- Tillery Street Campus
- Bryngwyn Road Campus
- Queen Street Campus
- Roseheyworth Road Campus
Liz Miles is the Principal for the Learning Community, with Vice Principals for Secondary and Primary phases, Nathan Jenkins and Kate Olsen. Each campus will retain a leadership presence responsible for the day to day running of the site.
