Welsh in Education Strategic Plan 2022-32 Consultation

Section 84 of The School Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013 requires a local authority to prepare a Welsh in Education Strategic Plan (WESP) setting out how they will develop Welsh-medium education.

Blaenau Gwent Council consulted on their draft Welsh in Education Strategic Plan (2022-2032) which, if approved, will come into effect from September 2022. The draft plan sets out how the local authority will carry out its education functions to improve and increase the use of Welsh in Education over the next ten years. The plan will contribute to Cymraeg 2050 initiative, where the Welsh Government wants to have 1 million Welsh speakers in Wales by 2050.

The statutory consultation period run from Friday 5th November 2021 for 8 weeks, concluding on Monday 3rd January 2022. All views, comments and opinions on the Draft Welsh in Education Strategic Plan were considered in detail, along with the associated implications for the plan.

The Final Draft plan was produced and submitted to Welsh Government Ministers for approval on the 31st January 2022 with the agreement that Blaenau Gwent’s Executive Committee approval will follow at the next meeting.  This was then approved by Executive Committee on 2nd March 2022.

A review of all Local Authorities WESP 10-year plans is currently being undertaken by Welsh Government Ministers, the result of which will be shared in March/April 2022, Welsh Ministers may:

  • approve the plan as submitted,
  • approve the plan with modifications, or
  • reject the plan and prepare another plan which will then be treated as the authority’s approved plan.

Once the Council have received The approved plan it will run from September 2022 until August 2032.

A revised copy of the draft WESP is available to download at the bottom of this page.
